The Firm's litigation and trial attorneys possess a particular expertise in labor, employment, employee benefits and public sector issues, but also regularly represent clients in commercial, constitutional, personal injury and general liability matters. We serve as counsel on defense panels for two major insurance companies.
Cases litigated in the employment area have included the full range of employment discrimination, sexual harassment, non-compete covenant and employment-related tort and statutory claims. We have represented both employers and individual officers, directors or management employees.
In the labor context, we are often called upon to represent clients in litigation involving challenges to decisions in arbitration or by the National Labor Relations Board as well as direct actions brought under section 301 of the LMRDA. The Firm has also litigated issues relating to employer-employee administrative proceedings such as those before the Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities and the Connecticut Department of Labor. We regularly represent employee benefit plans and employers acting as plan administrators and fiduciaries in claims brought under ERISA. Cases have included a class action challenge to a change in retiree benefits as well as claims of fiduciary breach in the administration of Voluntary Severance Plans.
Our litigation experience also covers the defense of Municipalities and School Boards in employment litigation by public sector employees similar to what is brought in the private sector and additional claims available to those employees under the state and federal constitutions and public sector employee statutes such as the Teacher Tenure Act. Other areas in which we are often called upon to represent Towns and School Boards in litigation include suits brought under the Freedom of Information Act and special education laws.
Due in large part to our success in handling cases assigned to us as counsel on employment defense panels for major insurance companies, we are also regularly asked to handle litigation involving personal injury, products liability, commercial transactions, and land use issues.
